International Women's Day--March 8

Updated: Mar 7

International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrated every year on March 8, is a global observance dedicated to honoring the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. Its origins trace back to the early 20th‑century labor and suffrage movements, when women around the world began organizing for fair wages, safer working conditions, and the right to vote. Over time, these efforts coalesced into an international day of recognition, officially adopted by the United Nations in 1975. Today, IWD serves as both a celebration of progress and a reminder of the work still ahead.

The day is marked by events, campaigns, and community gatherings that highlight women’s contributions across every sector—science, education, politics, the arts, business, and beyond. Organizations often use the occasion to spotlight women leaders, share stories of resilience, and elevate the voices of those who have historically been marginalized. Each year also carries a global theme, encouraging collective action on issues such as gender equity, economic empowerment, reproductive rights, or ending violence against women.

International Women’s Day is not only about honoring individual achievements but also about examining the structural barriers that continue to limit women’s opportunities. Persistent gaps in pay, representation, safety, and access to education remind us that gender equality is an ongoing effort. IWD invites people of all genders to reflect on these challenges and to commit to meaningful change—whether through policy, advocacy, workplace reforms, or everyday acts of solidarity.

Ultimately, International Women’s Day is a call to imagine and build a world where every woman and girl can thrive. It celebrates how far society has come while insisting that progress must continue. By uplifting women’s stories and championing equality, the day reinforces a simple but powerful truth: when women rise, communities and nations rise with them.

I am Gabriella Michele Bedsworth, and I am running to be your Congresswoman for Virginia's 5th District. If elected, I will advocate for equal rights for women. I need your vote and financial support to make this happen. No matter where you live, you can contribute to my campaign. Please share my website with family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and anyone else who is interested in bringing common sense back to politics. Thank you!
